Beaked hazel is a common forest and woodland shrub. It prefers slightly richer or moister soil than American hazel (C. americana), otherwise it is similar. In shady woods, stems arise in small clusters; in openings, it forms leafy bushes or thickets. The hazel nut is great wildlife food.
